MELANATION

Launched in 2017, MelaNation is our D.C. Chapter’s quarterly art zine (short for “magazine”) that aims to uplift the perspectives of local Black artists and writers, as well as engage Black folks in the D.C. area with political education. MelaNation has a complementary blog, as well as workshops. Last year, through MelaNation, the D.C. Chapter hosted a release party for their third issue, collaborated with Fantom Comics for a Sip N’ Create event, and did a reading at OutWrite — an annual literary festival uplifting work by people who are LGBTQIA+. 28 DAYS OF BLACK LOVE

In 2018, our D.C. Chapter created #28DaysofBlackLove, a digital campaign honoring Black love for Black History Month. The campaign, which was inspired by a video series by artist and organizer, JeNae’ Taylor, is a celebration of the countless kinds of love that Black people enjoy and share each day. Each week is dedicated to a particular kind of love — from healing love, to sexy love, to liberating love. The campaign is now an annual staple, which recurred this past February.
